When Alexander Dolgun, a young American working at the US Embassy in Moscow, left his office for lunch one day in 1948, he was kidnapped by the KGB. His ordeal, which to him seemed endless, became 'a classic testament to the immensities of courage and imagination that the ordinary human being, under siege, can muster in defence of his humanness.'
