This investigation into the events which brought about a woman's suicide explores the frustrations, envies, and petty jealousies of her childhood, and her relationship with her closest woman friend: The woman was kept alive only by her sense of social and moral superiority, without which she had no defence against the world.

IAN GRIMBLE , author of a book on the Sutherland evictions of the nineteenth century, discusses an earlier tragedy in the Highlands-the disappearance of early Gaelic writings in verse and prose
His reflections are prompted by the recent publication of a book on Edward Lhuyd 's journal of his Highland tour in 1699. which contains our first surviving catalogue of an early Gaelic library.
