by Alan Coren

Mr. Coren, a young writer on Punch, recently spent two years in America. While there he was foolish enough to try to gain admission to the teaching staff of an enormous State University. In this country it is still necessary to emphasise that the story of his attempt is not a fantasy. For that, at least, we should be grateful.
