Scene: Syracuse in Sicily, and the adjacent country, c. 340 B.C. Music by GUY HALAHAN played by the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Lawrence Leonard
Adapted for radio and produced by RAYMOND RAIKES Second broadcast
The basic situation of The Bondman-the rebellion of the slaves of Sicily in the year 340 B.C. in the absence of their masters at war against the Carthaginians—is taken from Plutarch, in whose Life of Timoleon Massinger found much for his purpose. But the romantic, platonic - love, and jealousy elements are his own invention, and here he demonstrates the ability to weld a complex action into a gripping play.
