by ITALO SVEVO translated by G. H. McWilliam with Maxine Audley , Michael Gough
Paul Daneman , Beatrix Lehmann
Production by MARTIN ESSLIN
To be repeated on May 6
Italo Svevo (1861-1928), the Triestine writer who was James Joyce 's friend, has long been acknowledged as one of the great novelists of our century. But until the publication of a volume of his plays two years ago it had not been realised that he was also passionately interested in the theatre. A Husband, which Svevo wrote at the turn of the century, is a dark comedy of marital love, jealousy, and fidelity.
