A Town Lost and Found by Peter Salway. Ph.D.. F.S.A.
Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge
In the Antonine Itinerary, a route-book of the third century A.D., Canbontum is mentioned, but it later vanished beneath the waters of the Ouse for fifteen hundred years. This part of Fenland has been drained and Dr. Salwav recently led an expedition which dug the area and found unmistakable evidence of a thriving, well-built Roman town.

When Elston arrived at Garlton he found a very packed town, but he was lucky enough to find an advertisement in The Church Gazette for a lodger in Baptist Street. As Mrs. Baines explained to him on arrival, Space is like gold up here, Charlie.' He found there more than he expected, and didn't stay very long.
