Eca de Queiroz (1843-1900), Portugal's greatest novelist, wrote Cousin Bazilio in 1877, while resident at Bristol as Portuguese Consul. He was a disciple of Flaubert, and as a study of the ravages wrought by passion in a romantic soul, Cousin Bazilio can be set beside Madame Bovary.
