A centenary assessment of East Lynne by Margaret M. Maison
The Divorce Act of 1857 produced a spate of improving novels in which adultery could be visited with legal as well as divine retribution. The most famous of these was Mrs. Henry Wood 's East Lynne which, her son said, was translated into every known tongue, including Parsee and Hindustani.'
