Fourteen years ago, at Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt, a large collection of Coptic documents was discovered in a sealed urn. They proved to be Gnostic in character. In this survey Professor van Unnik explains something of the importance of this find as the first direct evidence available on early Gnosticism and its struggle with orthodox Christianity.
