The Red Badge of Courage, the story of a young soldier in the American Civil War, is one of the curiosities of American literature. Crane, who died in 1900 when he was only twenty-eight, had never seen a battle of any kind when he wrote it, though after the publication of this great imaginative work he was much in demand as a war correspondent. Another memorable point about Crane's story is that it was one of the very first of the innumerable American novels that have taken ' the little man ' as their hero.
