Reyner Banham talks about Isaac Asimov's two science-fiction crime stories, The Caves of Steel and The Naked Sun. One of Asimov's detectives is a Holmes-type humanoid robot with a strong drive for justice built into his circuits. Justice he understands as that which exists when all the laws are enforced. Discussing these 'parables for an age of automation,' Banham argues that the best science fiction is a very effective medium in which to examine moral or ethical problems.
