(1923-1955)
A literary magazine recalled by four of its quondam editors:
Sir Richard Rees , Jack Common
Henry Williamson, Sir Ifor Evans
Programme compiled and introduced by Rayner Heppenstall The Adelphi was founded by the late
John Middleton Murry after the death of his first wife, Katherine Mansfield.
It was intended to be a vehicle for
D. H. Lawrence , parts of whose Fantasia of the Unconscious were published in early issues, as were writings by almost every notab e autoor of the day. Later The Adelphi first published George Orwell ' (E. A. Blair) and, apart from The Sunday Referee, Dylan Thomas.
This programme follows the journal through its succeeding political, pacifist, and agricultural phases and its return n
1948 to its position as a purely literary magazine, though by then circulation had dropped far below its original-and surprising—twenty thousand.
