The part played by the Anabaptists in the Reformation was one of social rebellion and disruptive idealism. Mr. Short, while admitting the suffering and restlessness caused by the movement, maintains nevertheless that ' Anabaptism, with all its violence, was the safety-valve of the sixteenth century.'
