Part 2
by Claude Schaeffer
Ever since 1929 the French Department of Antiquities has been carrying on excavations near the modern Syrian town of Ras Shamra. Ugarit, as the town was anciently called, is now known to have been one of the most important centres of Bronze Age civilisation; its palace one of the biggest and most luxurious in the ancientNear East. In this talk Professor Claude Schaeffer , the eminent French archaeologist, who has been in charge of the excavation from the beginning, tells of the results of last year's work. The talk is a shortened version of Professor Schaeffer's address delivered yesterday before the Académie des Inscriptions in Paris.
