Sauguet's Concerto d'Orphee, commissioned jointly by Baden-Baden Radio Orchestra and the Aix-en-Provence Festival, was written in 1952-3 with Louis Kaufman in mind as the soloist. The poetic idea behind the work is the legend of Orpheus charming nature and men with his music, Orpheus being represented by the solo violin.
Barbara Pentland is a lecturer in music at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Her Second Symphony was commissioned by the Youth Music League for the Vancouver Junior Symphony Orchestra and was completed in 1950. H.R.
