Sauguet's Concerto d'Orphee, commissioned jointly by Baden-Baden Radio Orchestra and the Aix-en-Provence Festival, was written in 1952-3 with Louis Kaufman in mind as the soloist. The poetic idea behind the work is the legend of Orpheus charming nature and men with his music, Orpheus being represented by the solo violin.
