' The Great Conjuror of England ' was the phrase applied to John Dee by many of his contemporaries, and this picture of him has persisted ever since. The speaker, however, argues that far from being a conventional practitioner of magic ' Dee was an important sixteenth-century scientist whose contribution to the atudy of mathematics was of the greatest value. Mr. Calder is a Research Fellow at Reading University and was formerly on the staff of the Warburg Institute. He has for some years been studying Dee's life and his contribution to science.

Rochester was the first of the English dandies: a famous rake and a wit. His poem * A Satire against Mankind,' a powerful attack on the egotism and vanity of the court of Charles II, was first printed as an anonymous broadsheet in 1679.

The original volume of Fabian Essays, edited by Bernard Shaw in 1889, was a landmark in British Socialist thought. ' New Fabian Essays ' has now been published under the editorship of R. H. S. Crossman , and in this talk Canon Demant discusses whether the new Fabian Essays have taken hold of the situation today as vividly as did the old.
