Sir John McEwen 's iong London sojourn (he taught, and later became Principal, at the Royal Academy of Music between 1898 and 1924) did little to weaken his nostalgia for his native Scotland. This was carefully projected into much of his music (the Solway Symphony. Grey Galloway , the Prince Charlie Rhapsody , etc.) The B minor quartet (his fourteenth) betrays no particular geographical flavour. It unfolds with a spaciousness more typical of Edwardian and Georgian times than its date (1927) would lead one to expect. There is none of the strenuousness of the twenties; on the contrary, its four well-contrasted movements show some attractive melodic writing, enlivened by rhythmic freedom.. T.H. Davies
