2-Religious Reactions
In the second lecture of this series, Canon Demant deals with the reactions of religion both to the rise and now to the decline of Capitalism. In its ascendency. Capitalism developed its own theology, which was part of the movement of liberalism in thought. Its chief tendency was towards the complete independence of the secular. Business transactions could not wait for the approval of theology or ethics. This naturally gave rise to considerable religious anxiety. The field of the Church's influence had been limited by the autonomy of the secular. Now, in its decline, Capitalism is reverting to Collectivism, but the autonomy of the secular remains. Canon Demant deals with the religious attitude towards what has been called the ' Gouvernement de la Nature.'
This lecture, to be repeated on May 11. will be printed in ' The Listener' dated May 18
