Second of two talks by Professor Gilbert Ryle on the problem of mind
In his first talk Professor Ryle criticised the traditional distinction between mind and body. But what of thoughts which are not accompanied by action? As we have such thoughts, do they not justify the distinction between mind and body? In this talk Professor Ryle re-examines the nature of consciousness and persists in his criticism of the distinction

Part 2
(Conducted by John Hollingsworth )
Gordon Jacob 's Fantasia on the Alleluia Hymn was written for the Peterborough Arts Week, and first performed at a concert in Peterborough Cathedral on May 28, when it was conducted by Dr. Douglas Hopkins. The tune on. which it is based will be familiar to most listeners; it is often sung to the words Now once again our hearts we raise.' The work begins quietly with fragments of the tune; soon a quicker melody is introduced on the violini and used as a kind of descant. Towards the end a fully harmonised version of the tune is heard on the brass with running passages on the strings. The quiet close recalls the opening of the work.
