Talk by Professor Gordon N. Ray of the University of Illinois
' It is the unwritten part of books that would be the most interesting,' Thackeray once wrote. The unwritten part of hit own novels ' Esmond ' and ' Pendennis ' is the story of how his own life is reflected in their pages. Professor Ray presents this story with evidence drawn from unpublished documents.
Professor Ray's edition of the letters and private papers of Thackeray substantially increased our knowledge of the novelist. He it now researching in this country in preparation for a biography of Thackeray.
