Today is the ninetieth birthday of Basil Harwood , who was born at Woodhouse, Gloucestershire. After studying at Bristol and Oxford he went to Leipzig and worked with Reinecke and Jadassohn. He held an appointment as organist in London for four years before going to Ely Cathedral and afterwards to Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, where he was organist from 1892 to 1909. He was the conductor of the Bach Choir at Oxford from its foundation in 1896 to 1900, when he became choragus of the University. His compositions include a number of choral works, anthems and services, and music for the organ. The Sonata in C sharp minor, the first of two for the organ, is perhaps his best-known work. — Harold Rutland
