On August 10. 1519. five Spanish ships under a Portuguese admiral sailed out of the Guadalquivir. They were the first to find a southern strait and enter the Pacific. Magellan himself was murdered by natives in the Philippines. Out of two hundred and sixty men, two hundred and forty-two perished. Eighteen survivors reached Seville on September 8. 1522, having sailed round the world. Bare-footed and in shrouds, carrying lighted candles, they marched to the cathedral to do penance and to say a Mass for the souls of their comrades
