When the Phantom Five broadcast for the first time, people who looked for their photographs in the local papers the following day were startled to find a group which seemed to be the result of an X-ray examination: an ingenious device to conceal the identity of the ' Five'. Although it has been impossible to keep their anonymity entirely-for good players are scarce and easily identified-they never use any other photograph.
Edgar Hawke has led many combinations of musicians since he settled in the West Country and he now directs the orchestra at the Grand Hotel, Bristol. He was formerly a sub-professor at the Royal Academy of Music, and led the orchestra under the conductorship of Sir Alexander Mackenzie.
