The Saga of a Welsh Industrial Town
A Newtown Feature by R. Howell Evans
Produced by T. Rowland Hughes
For more than a hundred years Newtown in Montgomeryshire was pre-eminent in the manufacture of Welsh flannel. From the days of the handloom, when home and factory were one and the same building, to the years of the larger mills and power machinery, and on to the present day when only one mill remains, this programme tells the story in a series of dramatic sketches. The whole programme was recorded at Newtown by the BBC Mobile Recording Unit, the characters being played by members of the Newtown Amateur Dramatic Society and by old millhands who still remember 'the good ould days'.
