Common Animals and Plants of House and Street
5-' Canaries'
G. W. MACALLISTER , Headmaster of Fairfield Public School, Glasgow
Canaries were introduced into Europe as cage birds more than three hundred years ago, and are now bred in captivity. They are, of course, perhaps the most attractive household pets all over, the world. They came originally from the Canary Islands, and the wild bird from which the cage birds have been bred is of a yellowish-green colour ; it belongs to the family of finches, into which group come the sparrow, the bullfinch, the goldfinch, and the brambling. Pupils are asked to bring with them for this lesson some mouldy bread or cheese, and will be told the reason for it by Mr. MacAllister.
