This chapel is really the choir of what was intended for a collegiate church, founded by Sir William St. Clair about the year 1446. The founder died leaving the church incomplete, but ' a perfect gem of mediaeval architecture and design '. Probably the best-known feature of Roslin Chapel is the so-called Apprentice Pillar which, according to tradition, was designed and finished by the master's apprentice while the former was abroad studying models. Tradition also says that the master on his return became so enraged at the success of his apprentice that he struck him dead. The carvings on the capitals of the columns might be described as a Bible in stone. They represent many scenes from the Bible, such as the fall of Adam, the expulsion from the Garden, the birth of Christ, Jesus working as a carpenter, and the prodigal son.
