Housman's pqetry,
The Shropshire' Lad more than any other, has been very popular with composers. This
Cycle consists of six of the songs, laid out for tenor voice with accompaniment of pianoforte and string quartet. They were first sung by Gervase Elwes , in 1909, in London. These songs are as truly English in spirit as anything Vaughan Williams has ever written. They. make adroit use of some of the older modal scales, as many genuine English folk songs do.
