The story of Ambroise Thomas's ' Mignon ' was drawn from Goethe's ' Wilhelm Meister.' The heroine of the opera, Mignon, is made much more of than in the original book, and it is certain that she has one of the most lovely songs to sing in the opera. Actually she is the long-lost daughterof the Count and has fallen into the hands of gypsies. Wilhelm, who is a young poet, protects her from them. and she tells him the story of her life. In this song, which forms part of the narration, she is singing of the land ' where the orange grows, where the fruit is gold, and the roses fair. 'Tis there I would live and die.'
