A serial version for broadcasting of Crosbie Garstin 's trilogy, ' The Penhales ', read by Geoffrey Tandy
Ortho Penhale. captive of war in Spain, has broken gaol again and is marauding round the country, hunted, and trying to find his way to the coast. In this instalment he comes across an old woman who has never seen the sea, but asks him to describe it because her only son had gone away there and never came back. Ortho's description, which you will hear this afternoon, is probably, in its truth of what the sailor really feels, one of the most notable passages Garstin ever wrote.

Overture, Don Giovanni. .....Mozart
Mozart's opera Don Giovanni was first performed at Prague on October 29, 1787. The overture, a fine and dramatic piece of music, sums up the atmosphere of the whole opera.
The opening sombre andante is based on the music that accompanies the apparition of ' The Stone Guest', while the succeeding allegro depicts Don Giovanni 's love of enjoyment.

Boellmann
Leon Boellmann , born in Alsace in 1862, was a real Frenchman, and none of his music could he mistaken for anything but genuine French. In one respect, however, his career as a composer was not the one usually followed by his countrymen — he wrote no music for the stage, the traditional path to success and popularity in the French world of music.
His Variations symphoniques for cello and orchestra have always been popular, though they are hardly on the same level as much of his other work ; the Sonata for cello and piano, for instance, which betrays some affinity with Cesar Franck , is more distinguished music.
