As many admirers of David Buchan know, improvisation has always been a special feature of his. Up to now he has always improvised on something in the programmes, and this has made some listeners wonder whether it is really improvisation in the strict sense of the term. Listeners have therefore been invited to submit the names of pieces they would like to hear him improvise on. Four of these will be given to him for the first time this afternoon as he sits before the microphone, and he will improvise on these four tunes.

NOISES AND VOICES

Who or what was that ? 
There are many variants of the popular broadcast competition games -spelling bees, word ending, tongue twisters, identification of sounds as in Puzzle Corner, and so on. Tonight the identification of sounds and voices will be the subject of a rather more elaborate game than any of this kind that have been played on the air. Two teams of habitual listeners will be chosen to play the game. They will be asked to give names to, and to define as exactly as possible, a highly varied number of sounds which will be played to them in the studio, and which will be audible also to listeners. These sounds will all have been heard on the air during the last few years.

THE WEEK'S GOOD CAUSE

An appeal on behalf of THE QUEEN'S HOSPITAL FOR 
CHILDREN, HACKNEY by HOWARD MARSHALL 
The Queen's Hospital for Children has over two hundredbeds (including forty-four at the Little Folks Home, Bexhill), and because of the enormous numbers of patients seeking its services, has had to add considerably to its accommodation. This work has gone as far as funds will allow, and before further progress can be made, the Hospital's debt of £25,000 must be considerably reduced. 
The Hospital, with its branch, treats children from birth up to the age of fourteen years, and needs about £40,000 each year to maintain its services.

Beethoven's Quartet in E flat, Op. 127 was commissioned by Prince 
Galitzin-to whom it is dedicated— in 1822. But Beethoven was entirely occupied with his Ninth Symphony and was unable to begin work on the quartet until 1824, when staying among the pine woods of Baden. 'In it we find', ', says Vincent d Indy, ' the crowning expression of that love of nature of which he gave such wonderful evidence in the course of his career'.

The Clarinet Quintet in B minor may be considered Brahms's swan-song in instrumental music and at the same time the crowning achievement of his life's work. It is a profoundly moving work, full of pathos and deep feeling, particularly in the first two movements and at the end of the finale. The second movement has a wonderfully romantic middle section in which the possibilities of the clarinet are exploited in a series of remarkable arabesques that are essentially Hungarian in style and origin.  
Another magnificent work for the clarinet, the Sonata with piano in E flat, will be broadcast on Friday.
