Joe Davis v. Sidney Smith
A commentary during play by Willie Smith from Thurston's Hall
This is the third match to be broadcast in this season's Daily Mail Gold Cup Tournament, and, like the previous two matches, is being played in the billiards hall which was incorporated in Thurston's new building when they moved from Catherine Street , Strand, in 1901 on the demolition of their old premises to make way for the Aldwych improvement scheme.
Thurston's, a name synonymous with billiards, goes back eighty-four years. Older fans will remember the famous ' Parlour' in Catherine
Street in which the great W. J. (Spot Stroke) Peel, who celebrates his eighty-first birthday next month, played many a match. Today's snooker match is the more interesting because the incomparable Joe Davis , playing from scratch, meets a man who will one day be his successor both at snooker and billiards — Sidney Smith , who receives 30. Davis. the professional champion in both games, has already two of these
Gold Cups on his sideboard, having won the Tournament two years in succession.
The commentary on the next Gold
Cup match will be broadcast on December 5.
