Kagawa, who is perhaps the greatest 
Christian writer and social reformer alive in Japan today, was born in Tokyo in 1888. He has written more than fifty books and his works on religion and economics are as popular as his novels. As a young man Kagawa set himself to reform the dreadfu] conditions in Kobe, a Western port of Japan, where he lived. He devoted five years to this work, befriending every sort of criminal and outcast. After three years in the American University at Princeton, be returned to the Kobe slums. An autobiographical novel ' Before the Dawn ' brought him immediate fame and a fortune. He set himself to emancipate the poor of Japan. A brief imprisonment as an agitator made him .more popular than ever. He organised relief after the great earthquake and fire in 1923. Perhaps his greatest individual achievement was his work as head of the Social Welfare Bureau at Tokyo during the disastrous slump in 1930 and 1931. He and Mrs. Kagawa still carry on their work today.

At the beginning of Liszt's ' Dante ' Symphony the motive of the ' Inferno ' is thundered out on the brass: Through me you pass into the city of woe. Through me you pass into eternal pain. Through me among the people lost for aye.' This is followed by the dread ' All hope abandon, ye who enter here ' on the horns and trumpets. Thereafter all is demoniacal turmoil, relieved only by the lovely episode of Paolo and Francesca, No greater grief than to remember days of joy when misery is at hand.' The ' Purgatorio' reflects Dante's mood after issuing from Hell, and is full of serenity. The concluding section speaks of a yearning for godliness and of redemption by prayer, ending on a note of ecstasy with the choral ' Magnificat '.
