Concerning the first performance of Malipiero's Second Symphony, which was broadcast last Wednesday, F. Bonavia in an article in the Radio Times pointed out that ' the listener who means to get the utmost enjoyment out of his Second Symphony should be ready to appreciate choice rather than vehement emotion, a poetic rather than realistic or philosophic outlook and noveltv which is not paraded pompously but is the result of serious thought, careful workmanship, and a markedly individual temperament. If he should experience difficulties it will be only because something, often something vital, is bound to elude us on a first performance.'
