Erwin Schulhoff , the eminent Czech pianist and composer, wrote his first Piano Sonata in 1924, at a time when much experimenting was being done in the way of employing jazz motifs and rhythms in serious music. The influence of jazz is particularly noticeable in the third movement of this Sonata. The slow movement is remarkable for being one of the very few examples of Passacaglia form to be found in a modern piano sonata.
