Sigfrid Karg-Elert, organist and composer, who died in April 1933 at the age of fifty-four, was a celebrated figure in the musical life of this century, though his activities and fame were associated with the comparatively small world of the organ rather than with the larger world of symphonic music. A brilliant pianist and organist himself, he wrote a great deal for the organ-over two hundred pieces, some of large dimensions, and many of great beauty and originality.
He studied at the Leipzig Conservatoire under Reinecke and Jadassohn. His first professional appointment was as professor at the Magdeburg Conservatoire, and in 1919 he was appointed professor of piano, theory, and composition at the Leipzig Conservatoire. He had an international reputation as an organist and on several occasions gave recitals in London.
