A recent RADIO TIMES article summed up the charm of Roger Quilter 's songs in these words : They have ... that indefinable but intensely palpable something that makes them, in the singer's phrase, " sing themselves". In a word, they are instinct with what musicianship may lack and grace very often lacks-powerful rhythm. There, I think, is the main secret of their success with the large public. Certainly it is the secret of their appeal to performers. Simple or difficult, slow or fast, quiet or vigorous, they move, carrying the voice with them. Voice part and piano part alike, singers can swim upon them. And they do.'
