RICHARD STRAUSS 'S one-act opera, Salomé, was first produced in Dresden in 1905. The version of the Biblical story that he used was a German translation of the one written by Oscar Wilde , originally in French, for Sarah Bernhardt , and the tense, grim, rather preciously poetic drama that Wilde made of it was one very capable of drawing from Strauss music that had much of the same quality. The stark horror of the ugly episode is no more hidden by the silky veil of Wilde's text than it is by Strauss's sensuous, revealing music, and yet the musician has contrived to enhance the hideous fascination of the repellent story as no other composer of his day could have done. ' The Dance of the Seven Veils ' is the dance performed by Salome before Herod, in return for which she is to have from him anything she may desire. She has only one desire, the head of Jochanaan, and with that wish fixed in her heart she begins to dance. Her movements, goaded by the wild, sensuous music, grow in frenzy, till throwing aside one by one the seven veils that conceal her beauty, she casts herself at the end prostrate at the feet of Herod.
