A series of eight broadcasts
Introduced by DR. ANNE Ross
5: Celts and Romans
The Romans conquered Gaul in 58 B.C. and began the conquest of Britain in A.D 43. In North Britain the military aspect of the occupation was dominant, while much of Scotland was never occupied and Ireland was not attempted. In southern Fngland the already urban-minded Belgic tribes soon accepted Roman ways and all the cultural changes these implied. The protection of Rome was withdrawn in A.D. 410. and the Christian Church became the main spiritual and cultural influence. The Celtic Church reached its peak in the sixth century, which is known as the ' Age of the Saints '

by PROFESSOR MAX BELOFF

This is particularly true in the Humanities and the Social Sciences, where the younser academics are obsessed with the glamour of American ways, and seduced by the possibilities of American money.
