The Triumph of the Therapeutic by JOHN WREN-LEWIS
Philip Rieff , Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, is editor of the collected papers of Sigmund Freud , and is a professed Freudian. He believes that modern culture is committed to ' the therapeutic effort,' to well-being for its own sake, after the failure of demand-systems like Communism and Christianity. John Wren-Lewis thinks that Rieff goes some way beyond Freud—but still not far enough.
