In 1964 the whole world In both hemispheres and on both sides of the Iron Curtain celebrated the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth. Some 5.000 books, monographs. and articles appeared in every civilised language as well as performances of plays, postage stamps, medals and souvenirs. Tonight Professor Isaacs attempts to assess the advances in scholarship and interpretation and to suggest the extent to which we have a new picture of Shakespeare the man.
