Eight programmes for teachers and parents on the changing scene in secondary schools
Introduced by DR. F. HILLIARD
1: The Newsom Report
In August 1963 the Ministry of Education published the report of a committee set up ' to consider the education between the ages of thirteen and sixteen of pupils of average or less than average ability.' The Report was called Hall Our Future, and the Chairman of the Committee was Sir John Newsom. The Report found a great deal wrong with much of our secondary school teaching. The attitude to the schools of many pupils was put by one youngster who said, when asked for an opinion on the new school building, ' It could all be marble. sir, but it would still be a bloody school.'
In tonight's programme SIR JOHN NEWSOM and CHARITY JAMES of Goldsmiths' College, London University discuss the impact of the Report on schools, and whether its recommendations go far enough to meet many of our severe educational problems
Produced by Peter Jarvis
The Investigate by Reuben Ship

An argument for looking again at Duns Scotus by Eric DOYLE , O.F.M.
Pope Paul has recently suKgested. in a letter to the English hierarchy, that the thought of this celebrated but little-read thinker. bom in Scotland 700 years ago, might well offer a basis for ecumenical dialogue between Roman Catholics and Anglicans. Fr. Doyle contends that Duns Scotus has yet other links with the twentieth century, with Pierce. Wittgenstein, and Sartre-even with Jung.
Part 2
Concerto for piano, men's chorus, and orchestra
Prologo e Introito Pezzo giocoso Pezzo serioso All' Italiana Cantico
Last of three concerts, conducted by Jascha Horenstein , in which the programmes are the same as in a cycle given by Busoni himself in Berlin in 1921. Horenstein, who knew Busoni very well, was present at all these concerts, including the rehearsals.
