SQon after penicillin was first used in 1945 penicillin-resistant forms of staphylococcus aureus appeared in hospitals. These remained a serious problem till 1960, when new penicillins that would kill them were synthesised. These new penicillins are very effective, but already occasional examples of resistance to them have been noticed. What does the future hold?
