The English Hymnal Service Book contains Merbecke's setting of the Holy Communion, the Psalms, and Canticles, simply pointed, and all the words of Divine Service in which the congregation joins aloud, as well as more than 300 hymns. This new aid to public worship in the Church of England is reviewed by the Rev. Cyril Taylor

Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge The years 1517 to 1555 saw not so much the triumph of a new separatist faith as the gradual acceptance of a divided Christendom which no one had wanted. In part, of course, this happened for reasons of religion; but politics were a decisive influence.
