PERCUSSION
AND ALL THAT JAZZ
A special Percussion Group was formed for part of today's BBC experimental broadcast. Eight musicians were used: three percussionists (bringing with them every piece of equipment they possessed); a conventional rhythm section-piano, bass, guitar, and drums; and to provide tonal contrast, one player with a variety of wind instruments. In all, some fifty pieces of musical equipment were used by the eight men, and the resulting sound was created on paper for them by five arrangers with contrasting individual styles. The Technical Department had to work hard, for musicians play the same, whether the sound is to be mono or stereo, but the arrangers provided scores designed for stereo which the technicians helped to realise in terms of sound. You may find the result intriguing—even if you only sit back and enjoy the music.
