A weekly programme about work in the world of science
Electricity Without a Generator by D. B. Welbourn of the Department of Engineering in the University of Cambridge
When gases are heated sufficiently they break up to give, among other things, electrons. But an electric current consists of a stream of electrons, so scientists are exploring the possibility that it might be feasible to get a useful electric current right out of the furnace, so to speak. One attraction is that the efficiency of the process would be extremely high.
