A weekly programme about work in the world of science
An Antibiotic Policy by Mary Barber , M.D.
Reader in Clinical Bacteriology.
Postgraduate Medical School, London
Elimination of pests is not the straightforward task that it once seemed to be: some insects resist D.D.T., and some bacteria remain unaffected by penicillin and other antibiotics. The proportion of resistant strains of bacteria in hospitals all over the world has been rising recently. To combat this, doctors are adopting a more cautious attitude to antibiotics. Dr. Barber describes a recent experiment that has had encouraging results.
