In this series of four programmes C. F. Powell, Professor of Physics in the University of Bristol, talks to a group of laymen about the structure of the atom, the fusion process, the fission process, and the production and use of nuclear energy.
4-Implieations and Applications
Professor Powell recapitulates the fission process, explains how the energy in a fission reactor is taken off and made available as electricity, and how fission can ' breed ' plutonium-itself a nuclear fuel-for further reactions. He discusses the use of the radioactive by-products, the safety factor, and the social uses of this new source of power which, because it can operate on a lorry-load of fuel a year, can be made available in almost any part of the world.
