QUINTET
Percy Grainger was bom at Brighton, near Melbourne in Australia, just over fifty years ago. He gave piano recitals as a boy and accumulated enough money to study at the Frankfort Conservatorium. In 1900 he came to London and made a name for himself as a brilliant pianist, and during the early part of the war he went to America, and has since returned to England only as a visitor from the States, where he has made his home. As a composer, Grainger has concentrated on a certain type of music-the folk-song element dressed for today and embroidered in a very individual manner.
Roger Quilter was born at Brighton in 1877 and educated at Eton, where he remained until 1895, when he went to the Hoch Conservatorium, Frankfort, to study composition under Ivan Knorr. It is interesting to note that his fellow-students were Cyril Scott, Percy Grainger, Norman O'Neill, and Balfour Gardiner. On Quilter's return to England it was not long before he began to make a name for himself with his songs and incidental music to plays, which now take a foremost place in modern British light music.
