' What goes on inside the Root'
B. A. KEEN , D.Sc., F.R.S.
Today Dr. B. A. Keen is to tell you how a plant grows by the slow division of its cells, and by the movement of moisture and nutriment through it by conducting-vessels. He will illustrate how one and the same plant may be a comparative pygmy in unsuitable soil, and a comparative giant in soil it likes.
He will talk about plants that bloom for a year and die, and are called annuals -such as godetias, nasturtiums and mignonette. Of those that are sown one year and bloom the next, and are called biennials-such as wallflowers, sweet williams, evening primroses. And of those plants that throw out fresh roots and growth year after year, and are called perennials-such as golden rod, phlox, Jerusalem Cross.
But Schools should remember there may be both annual and perennial kinds of the same variety. For example, candytuft. Again, many of the biennials, if sown early enough, will bloom the same season.
EILEEN POWER, Professor of Economic
History in the University of London
Today Professor Eileen Power is to talk about the wandering Mongols, or Tartars, and of the rise of Chingis Khan (1 162 to 1227). She will describe their irresistible advance on horseback. They conquer China as far as the Yangtze ; they conquer Central Asia, and hold the silk road ; they conquer Southern Russia, and invade Hungary; they conquer Persia and take Baghdad (1258). They conquer China south of the Yangtze, and put an end to the Sung Empire (1279).
Professor Power will discuss the rule of Kublai Khan (1260 to 1294) and the Mongol Emperors of China; the Mongol peace and the open roads between East and West ... And as a sequel to this talk, Schools are to hear next week a dramatic interlude by Rhoda Power dealing with Kublai Khan and with Marco Polo , the Venetian traveller, who met and wrote about him.

In a lifelong observation of birds Cherry Kearton has noticed a dispensation of nature, whereby the bird hatched on the cliff edge learns to use its wings before it can walk, or it would assuredly topple over and break its neck. And he has had the proof that instinct can adapt itself to circumstance. *
Thirty years ago he stood up to his neck in water off an island in Scotland to photograph the last pair of ospreys to nest in the British Isles. The nest, built of sticks, was high off the ground, at the top of a dead tree. Here doubtless the young birds learnt first to use their wings. Some years later he was on Gardner's Island, seventy miles from New York, where ospreys were protected. There being no danger oi molestation, they had built their nest on the shore, though it was placed on the top of a huge construction of sticks and seaweed. He waited four days to get the photographs of young ospreys learning to fly (as shown in his film). But it is interesting to note that they used their legs first, and looked like three little figures dancing on top of the mound.
