BERNARD SHORE (Viola)
ANGUS MORRISON (Pianoforte)
Sonata for Viola and Pianoforte Charles Koechlin
As listeners are by now well aware,
Bernard Shore is leader of the violas in the B.B.C. Orchestra, and, as is taken almost for granted with B.B.C. leaders, is.a soloist of a high order, Actually, Shore began his career as an organist, gaming an Exhibition at the Royal College of Music in 1914. But wounded in the right hand in the War, he had to give the organ up and began studying the viola, with Lionel Tertis as his chief master. Then he took to chamber music, and, after years of that, to solo work, with Tertis's magnificent example to profit by and emulate. He made his first appearance as a soloist at the Promenades in 1922, giving the first performance of the solo part in Gordon Jacob 's Viola Concetto, and later in Vaughan Williams 's Flos Campi at a B.B.C. Symphony Concert. In the years since then, Shore has been constantly increasing his repertory, and at his concerts in London, in Amsterdam last year, and in most British concert halls of note, he has been heard in all the most important works for the viola.
Angus Morrison is also well known to listeners, both as pianist and composer. His The Lake Isle of Innisfree, often broadcast, is one of the most charming songs of recent years.
